Video game adaptations have taken a turn in recent years, especially when it comes to animated TV shows. Netflix has been one of the leaders in this and will continue its trend by turning Devil May Cry into an anime. You can see the announcement teaser below, which gives us a look at its version of Dante, the protagonist of the games.

The Devil May Cry anime is in good hands as Castlevania executive producer Adi Shankar will be the showrunner of the adaptation of the Capcom video game. Studio Mir, the team behind My Adventures with Superman and Harley Quinn, will animate the series.

Netflix Brings Dante to Life in a Devil May Cry Anime

The announcement came at the first-ever Drop 01 event, a virtual showcase Netflix has held to unveil what it has in development under its animation umbrella. Some of what was shown included the original anime Blue Eye Samurai, the next wave of episodes for Sonic Prime, and the Castlevania spinoff Nocturne.

The only other detail known about the Devil May Cry anime is that Alex Larsen (Yasuke) will co-write the series with the Castlevania executive producer.

The Devil May Cry anime is far from the first video game show on Netflix. It has turned other games into anime series with Arcane (League of Legends) and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (Cyberpunk 2077). The streamer has invested heavily into The Witcher, with a mainline series, spinoff, and other projects either released or in the making. It has had collaborations with Capcom in the past, particularly for numerous animated and live-action adaptations of Resident Evil. Current projects in development include Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Gears of War, Mega Man, Assassin’s Creed, and BioShock.

Video game movies, as a whole, have taken quite a turn over the years. For decades, the adaptations were poor-quality takes that never seemed to understand the source material’s appeal or success. Now, we have received commercial and critical hits with The Last of Us, Arcane, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and both Sonic movies.

No date has been set for the Devil May Cry anime, but it is “coming soon” to Netflix.
