Screenwriter Michael Waldron discussed Stephen Strange’s future in the MCU after the premiere of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the box office numbers. In the traditional horror movie fashion, the movie ended on a cliffhanger that left fans with many questions. But as many have pointed out, the film comes full circle from 2016’s Doctor Strange as Stephen was told, “The bill comes due.”

Wong then reminds Stephen of this line said by sorcerer Karl Mordo. As he used the Darkhold to possess his own corpse, there is expected to be some backlash to this decision. Waldron then went on to say in an interview with comicbooks that,
It was a little bit of a throwback to Raimi’s old Evil Dead. Especially towards that groaner of an ending, or it’s just like, ‘Oh my God, things turned out bad in the end.’ So, yeah. We’ll see what all that means for Stephen.
Even after all of Stephen’s experience in the MCU, Waldron teased that he might be suited to be an anchor of the Avengers. More specifically, he “may be better suited than ever to really be an anchor of the Avengers moving forward.”
Doctor Strange 2:The Box Office Rise and Falls and Stephen’s MCU Future
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has the largest domestic box office weekend of 2022. As of now, it has earned $183 million, compared to other films like The Batman ($134 million). Despite these numbers, the film is still one of the lowest ranking MCU titles, with a B CinemaScore.
At the same time, the movie is seeing a sharp decline at the box office. According to Variety, the film earned $90 million on its opening day. However, this number dropped 81% on Friday the 13th, earning just $16.7 million. Despite this, though, the film is still a major hit globally. It has since passed the $500 million mark, with $300 of that being domestic.
Currently, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is exclusively in theaters.
