Josh Brolin is a popular actor known for being cast in movies like Deadpool 2, Avengers: End Game, and No Country For Old Men. The actor is often praised for his ability to commit to roles, seemingly perfect for the wide range of characters he portrays. Although this talent came in handy for parts like Thanos and Cable, it once cost Josh Brolin an audition for a lead role in a sequel to a sci-fi classic.
Josh Brolin Once Ruined An Audition By Foaming At The Mouth
Josh Brolin is featured on the season 17 finale of the viral YouTube show Hot Ones, an internet talk show in which celebrities are interviewed over a batch of increasingly spicy hot wings. During the colorful interview, interviewer Sean Evans asks Brolin about a role the award-winning actor missed out on after he foamed at the mouth during an audition: “Is it true that you blew the audition for The Fly II by over committing to the metamorphosis process!?” Brolin confirms with a “yes” before diving deeper into the story: “It was the Fly II, and I went in there, man, and I was totally committed…I did this for like 22 years for pretty much every audition I ever did,” laughs Brolin, “but I was on the ground, and I was frothing at the mouth because he’s in a chrysalis.”
Josh Brolin then provides a philosophical explanation for why he felt his level of commitment was necessary for the audition: “He’s in a cocoon, like, what happens to one that’s human that’s not used to something like morphing from one thing to another? One would imagine that it would be a painful process, would one not?” The casting directors disagreed. Brolin confirms that, although the casting directors gave him a reassuring send-off, he had already been rejected by the time he got home. Brolin tells Hot Ones that not only did his over-commitment cost him the audition, but his agent told him he would likely never get a chance to audition for the crew again. “I still don’t understand to this day,” Brolin went on to say, “like, don’t you want somebody who commits?”.
The Hot Ones interview gives fans little-known insight into Josh Brolin’s acting career. It also reveals obscure facts about the actor, like one of the scariest things about filming Deadpool 2 and how actor Anthony Zerbe influenced Josh Brolin’s career as a character actor.
