Nimona Anime Comes to Netflix
Nimona is an upcoming animated feature film set to release exclusively on Netflix later this year. Originally starting as a graphic novel written and drawn by award-winning cartoonist ND Stevenson, Nimona blends sci-fi and fantasy to tell the story of the titular shapeshifting teenager.
A film adaptation was originally intended to be developed by Blue Sky Studios and began production back in 2015. However, after Blue Sky was shut down by Disney, fate of the Nimona came into question for some time until Netflix came in to claim the rights and finish the project.
Stevenson has worked with Netflix before, being the executive producer of the 2018 series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.
The film is co-written by Robert L. Baird (Big Hero 6) and Lloyd Taylor (Spies in Disguise), will feature the voice talents of Chloë Grace Moretz as Nimona and Riz Ahmed as Ballister Blight.
The official synopsis for Nimona released by Netflix following the trailer reads:
“A knight is framed for a crime he didn’t commit and the only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a shape-shifting teen who might also be a monster he’s sworn to kill. Set in a techno-medieval world unlike anything animation has tackled before, this is a story about the labels we assign to people and the shapeshifter who refuses to be defined by anyone.”
The film is presented an inherently queer-focused narrative with themes of identity and relationships at the forefront.
The film is set to be shown at the Annecy Animation Film Festival on June 14, 2023. Nimona will officially be available to stream on Netflix on June 30, 2023.
