Since some iPhone models fail to perform well in 2023, we must change them occasionally. The batteries commonly need to be changed every 3 years, but it’s not an easy job an ordinary user can do. Although there’s a chance of ruining the battery or phone itself, it’s not recommended to do it yourself. Thankfully, the EU is likely asking Apple to make the iPhone batteries replaceable, and that could affect the iPhone design worldwide. If that happens, iPhone batteries will be easier to change, just like how they were in old mobile phones. But there are a few catches and solid reasons why it shouldn’t happen.

The reason behind the need for replaceable batteries is the environment. Apple took a few steps to be more environment-friendly, such as removing the charger from the box and shipping with fewer trucks. As the EU says, portable batteries are better for the environment, and they think that phone batteries should be easy to replace:

“A portable battery should be considered to be removable by the end-user when it can be removed with the use of commercially available tools and without requiring the use of specialised tools, unless they are provided free of charge, or proprietary tools, thermal energy or solvents to disassemble it. Commercially available tools are considered to be tools available on the market to all end-users without the need for them to provide evidence of any proprietary rights and that can be used with no restriction, except health and safety-related restrictions.”

Let’s remember why the phone batteries aren’t replaceable anymore because the unreplaceable battery designs let the manufacturer design a thinner and cooler phone. It’s also aimed to strengthen the phones and get away with designs that throw the battery when the phone is dropped. EU’s only exception seems like safety-related reasons, but Apple will surely want to make it. So it’s worth noting that returning to the replaceable batteries is a low chance.
