Virtual Reality has been a dream of gamers pretty much since the beginning of the hobby. The idea of stepping into a game and taking direct control of a digital environment is an alluring one. For years it was simply out of reach. That’s no longer the case. With VR now a well-established subgenre of gaming, there are plenty of upcoming releases to be excited about. Even traditional games now employ the technology. Next month brings some great titles to VR enthusiasts eager to get their hands on the latest thing. Here are some of the best VR games coming in September 2023.
Toss!
Toss! by Vertigo Games starts with a simple premise: you’re a monkey, and you’re swinging around. The glorious thing about VR games is they can actually work with such a basic starting point. As long as the game feels good, players will likely be on board. Toss! looks to deliver an exciting first-person swinging experience, but the visuals look as tantalizing as the actual gameplay. Its vibrant, colorful palette perfectly vibes the youthful vibe it’s aiming for. With 75+ levels across multiple biomes, there should be plenty here for players to dig into.
Increment
Mark Pil’s Increment promises to be a non-violent game with no dialog, which will already tell many players if this could be one of the best VR games in their eyes. Its vibrant world looks even better in motion. The game sports a variety of simple, kinetic interactions the player can use to make progress through its puzzle-like interactions. The game is unabashedly experimental in mechanics as well as aesthetics, and only time will tell how well the game’s various elements cling together. Increment looks promising, however, so it’s good news that players only have to wait a little longer to try it for themselves.
I Expect You To Die 3: Cog In The Machine
I Expect You To Die 3: Cog In The Machine is a mouthful of a title. Schell Games seems to know what they’re doing with the newest installment in their spy-themed puzzle series. Puzzles are one of the things that VR does best, thanks to the satisfying visual feedback they tend to provide. The prior two games in the series both have ratings of Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam, so expectations for this one are high. Schell Games has a track record for quality, so if it ends up being one of the best VR games of September, few will be surprised.
Hellsweeper VR
Why is Hellsweeper VR shaping up to be one of the best VR games of September? Combat is gory and visceral, and with a large selection of weapons to choose from, the player won’t lack for ways to dispatch their demonic foes. Customizable characters, upgradeable skills, co-op, and a deep roguelike experience are all good reasons to grab this one when it drops in September. Hack and slash fans should have their hands full with numerous levels and enemy variants. That’s fortunate since August’s best games are already almost behind us.
System Critical 2
System Critical 2Â by Old Formulas is easily one of the most anticipated VR titles slated for release this September. Platformers and shooters are two of the genres that fare best in VR, so a platformer shooter like System Critical 2Â has success in its DNA. Guns, shields, melee weapons, and an arm cannon give players options to keep things interesting in combat. Screenshots don’t do justice to the feel of the game in motion. Old Formulas has the bones of something great here, maybe even one of the best VR games of month.
