Marvel’s MODOK is getting quite the upgrade for Thor Annual #1. Previews for the one-shot show the villain taking on a cosmically larger presence as he prepares to battle Thor. The God of Thunder attempts to put an end to MODOK’s reign over the Ten Realms. However, MODOK is no longer what he once was. Instead, the cosmic power he holds makes him a much more formidable foe than ever before.
Marvel’s MODOK Is No More
Thor Annual #1 comes from writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, with art by Ibraim Roberson. A synopsis of the book shares that MODOK is now fueled by revenge and a newfound refusal to ever be a pawn in someone else’s game. The super-intelligent Marvel villain now has the power of the Ten Realms (except Asgard), giving him might even Thor cannot imagine. This means the God of Thunder will need some help from friends in those Realms to stop this cosmic threat.
Since his introduction in the Marvel Universe, MODOK has always stood for “Mechanized Organism Designed Only For Killing.” However, with this new power at his fingertips, the villain introduces himself as something else. He is MODOK no more, calling himself MYTHOS (“Master of Yggdrasil. Tyrant of Humanity. Omnipotent Savior”).
Previews of Peril
Marvel recently shared some preview panels of Thor Annual #1. The sneak peek at the one-shot shows just how big of a threat MYTHOS has become. These pages show Thor landing on Earth as he pursues MYTHOS. The God of Thunder is looking out over a city, possibly New York. It is overrun with cords and cabling as well as large colorful crystals. These cords and cables lead to a massive crystalline cocoon protected by flying robots.
As Thor blasts through the cocoon demanding the tyrant MYTHOS reveals himself, the villain does just that. A monstrous MODOK is sitting atop a throne of crystal and cosmic energy. He towers over Thor and declares himself to be MYTHOS.
