Mary Jane Watson is ready to lean into the superhero role under the name Jackpot. In the pages of Amazing Spider-Man #31, Peter Parker’s longtime love embraces the hero lifestyle. If you have kept up with Mary Jane’s recent adventures with Felicia Hardy, you know that the iconic redhead has had superpowers for a while. Now, she embraces them fully as she enters the Marvel Universe as Jackpot.
Mary Jane Is Jackpot
Teased in 2021’s Timeless #1, Mary Jane’s superpowers fully emerged during Jed MacKay and Vincenzo Carratu’s Mary Jane & Black Cat limited series. They seemed to come out of nowhere to help the iconic character protect those she loved. However, Mary Jane knew about these powers and kept them secret, especially from Spider-Man. The powers themselves appear to be random, like a slot machine. Based on luck, Mary Jane can gain temporary superpowers for certain situations hence why the name Jackpot is a perfect fit.
Marvel recently revealed the art for Mary Jane’s new Jackpot look. The costume comes from superstar artist Humberto Ramos. The new suit leans into the Jackpot name with a casino-esque look to it. Along with the new suit, Mary Jane stars in a new limited series in the future. But first, Amazing Spider-Man #31 is set to give the new hero an origin story of sorts.
An Oversized Issue
The special overstuffed Amazing Spider-Man #31 comes from writers Dan Slott and Zeb Wells, with art from Patrick Gleason, John Romita Jr., and Scott Hanna. The main narrative focuses on the wedding of Janice Lincoln and Randy Robertson. This will set up the next big arc for the Amazing Spider-Man series.
Mary Jane’s new Jackpot story is a bonus tale included in the issue. Writer Celeste Bronfman and artist Alba Glez draft a new adventure for Mary Jane that will kickstart her new era as Jackpot. The story sees Mary Jane coming to terms with the recent tragedy that hit her family in earlier issues. Now, she is suiting up and taking to the streets to help other families in need!
Mary Jane’s Jackpot debut hits shelves on August 9.
