Marvel is putting the Winter Soldier in charge of a brand-new squad in December’s Thunderbolts. The new series comes from writing duo Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing alongside artist Geraldo Borges. It will continue the writing pair’s transformation of Bucky Barnes that took place throughout Captain America’s recent Cold War event. However, to save the world, Bucky is going to need a little help. So, he is putting together a team of some of Marvel’s best.
New Thunderbolts Under Winter Soldier
Now that the Outer Circle is gone, Bucky is the only person alive who knows the dark secrets of the country. Naturally, he is using that knowledge to put an end to anyone or anything that would threaten peace. However, he can’t do it alone. Enter a new team of Thunderbolts to help Winter Soldier with that mission.
This new lineup of Thunderbolts includes Black Widow, Sharon Carter, White Widow, Red Guardian, U.S. Agent, and Shang-Chi. Together, alongside Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Bucky is commanding this new team to do some good in the world. This means going on high-stakes missions and serving the one thing they do best: justice! With all this knowledge of the world’s dark secrets, the Winter Soldier is aiming the Thunderbolts at some heavy hitters. These include Red Skull, Kingpin, and Doctor Doom.
Setting Up a New Series
Writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing are no strangers to the character of Bucky Barnes AKA Winter Soldier. The duo helped usher in a new era for the longtime sidekick during Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty. Now, they are taking Bucky on his own adventure with his own team. Straight from the Marvel website, the pair share a little about what readers can expect from this new Thunderbolts series:
“The call has gone out to all those who call the shadows their home; every spy, assassin, and renegade has a part to play in Bucky Barnes’ all-encompassing and uncompromising hit on the singular, monstrous living symbol of fascism: the Red Skull. Alongside our old friend Geraldo Borges, we’re taking this opportunity to tell a very different kind of team book. This is a whole new era for the Thunderbolts, and it starts with a four-part espionage epic, an ever-shifting cast and a single overarching goal: to tear down a century of Nazi evil with justice like lightning.”
More info on this series is expected to come out of San Diego Comic Con this month, so stay tuned!
