Marvel is taking Kamala Khan on a journey of self-discovery in the new series Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant. The upcoming four-issue limited series comes from the writing team of Sabir Pirzada and actress Iman Vellani. That’s right, the Ms. Marvel and The Marvels star is making her comics debut with this new series. The duo is joined by artists Carlos Gomez and Adam Gorham to explore Kamala Khan’s heritage as a mutant. Plus, the Marvel hero is getting a whole new look from Jamie McKelvie.
Kamala’s Tumultuous Journey
Recently, life hasn’t been too kind to Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel. The hero teamed up with Peter Parker’s Spider-Man to help save the world in Amazing Spider-Man. However, this led to her tragic death as she sacrificed herself to finish the mission. Of course, you can’t keep a good hero down for long, and the truth about Kamala Khan’s Inhuman and mutant identity is getting revealed, specifically in the upcoming X-Men: Hellfire Gala #1.
During the one-shot, Kamala Khan is getting a second shot at life through the Krakoan Resurrection Technology. This is a bit of a shock to Ms. Marvel, who had no idea she was a mutant. Unfortunately, the one-shot will not have time to let Kamala process this new information. The pesky Fall of X event is throwing everything into chaos. However, it will give Ms. Marvel the opportunity to work with her fellow mutants on a secret X-Men mission.
Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant
Kamala will finally have time to explore her identity in August’s Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Iman Vellani and Sabir Pirzada spoke about the project and working together. Vellani called it “scarier” than joining the actual MCU as she has never written anything before. Meanwhile, Pirzada shared that it was humbling to work with Vellani because she “knows her comics even better than I do.”
The duo also shared that this new aspect of Kamala Khan’s identity will not “retcon her Inhuman origin.” Instead, the series will reflect all those core themes of identity that the Ms. Marvel comics have consistently explored”.
Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant #1 is on sale on August 30.
