One of the most popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics ever created, TMNT: The Last Ronin, is finally set to receive a sequel this upcoming December. The news came directly from IDW Publishing at yesterday’s Comic-Con, where it was revealed that the creative team of the original series will be returning for the sequel. The team includes heavy hitters such as Ben Bishop, Esau Escorza, Tom Waltz, and the father of TMNT, Kevin Eastman.
The Last Ronin sequel also has an official name: TMNT: The Last Ronin II – Re-Evolution. Much to the delight of TMNT fans worldwide, IDW showed off the official cover art as well.
However, The Last Ronin sequel will differ wildly from the original. Instead of focusing on a solo protagonist, the book series follows a cast of four new turtles – Yi, Uno, Odyn, and Moja. The reaction to this announcement has been almost universally positive.
TMNT: The Last Ronin II is a Love Letter to TMNT’s Origins
In an interview with IGN, Eastman reported, “The real heart and soul for me with dusting off and bringing Last Ronin to life three years ago was my belief ‘Every beginning must have an end. With all the respect in the world for my co-creator Peter Laird, I wanted to bring full circle to what we started in 1984 and set out to do in 1987. With The Last Ronin, with my friend Tom Waltz and an incredible gathering of brilliant artisans, we accomplished that 33 years later. A very fitting end indeed.”
Still, regarding the Last Ronin Sequel, Eastman concluded the interview by stating, “…All new characters, in a whole new universe to really sink our teeth into. And the best part – with all the original crew back to make sure we get it right. I can’t wait for you to see what we have in store for them.”
TMNT: The Last Ronin Is Being Developed Into a AAA Video Game
With an estimated release date of 2025-2026, The Last Ronin is also being adapted into a AAA action-adventure game. Though the developers have not yet been announced, they are calling it “God Of War-inspired.”
Until then, TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is receiving a highly-anticipated survival mode DLC.
