Marvel is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Secret Wars by revisiting the crossover event in a new limited series. Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars: Battleworld takes readers back to, well, Battleworld. Only this time, Spider-Man and Human Torch are put in the spotlight to give a whole new perspective to the groundbreaking event. This limited series promises to reveal never-before-seen secrets and fit effortlessly in the pages of the original. Plus, Secret Wars editor Tom DeFalco is returning to write this new series alongside artist Pat Oliffe.
Secret Wars
The original Secret Wars event left quite a mark on the Marvel Universe. It is the name given to the first-ever company-wide crossover event. It came to be thanks to Mattel’s request to take advantage of the sudden resurgence in action figure toys in the 80s. So, Marvel brought all its properties together for one major event that would spawn a bunch of toys and collectibles. However, it is the comics that became a big hit with fans.
The original Secret Wars event began with just about every Marvel hero and villain getting “called” to Battleworld. This includes Spider-Man, the X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, and many more. The cosmic entity known as the Beyonder summoned them to Battleworld for the ultimate test of good vs. evil. A sequel series published the following year followed the Beyonder heading to Earth.
Return To Battleword
Now, Marvel is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Secret Wars with a limited series this November. Tom DeFalco and Pat Oliffe tell a new adventure set during the Secret Wars timeline starring Spider-Man and Human Torch. DeFalco shared that telling this new Secret Wars story was a daunting creative challenge. However, the writer feels that Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars: Battleworld tells a satisfying story. One that is satisfying for today’s readers and will have “creative ripples” that will still have an effect on comics in the future.
