So far, 2023 has been a fantastic year for anime. Some great action shows are returning, such as Jujutsu Kaisen, and some of the best romantic anime, like My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Level 999. Thankfully, the last stretch of the year is packed, too, bringing many genres of anime for every fan. Whether you want a comedy anime about a dysfunctional family or one of the most famous Isekai light novels, there’s something for everyone. Here, we’ve listed the 10 best anime coming during the Fall 2023 season.
10 Best Upcoming Anime for the Fall 2023 Season
Shows like One Piece, Dr. Stone, and Jujutsu Kaisen will continue, but they premiered a while ago. We’ll focus on actual premieres of new seasons and shows only. Without further ado, let’s look at the 10 best anime of Fall 2023.
10. Berserk of Gluttony – ACGT
We’d need more hands and fingers to count the number of anime shows where the underdog gets an overpowered skill and raises through the ranks of whatever place they’re at. While that might sound like a complaint, it isn’t; we can’t get enough. This time, we’re getting a story that focuses on Fate, a gatekeeper whose fate will change (no pun intended) once he discovers he has the Gluttony skill.
This skill allows him to grow stronger by slaying bandits but, sadly, increases his hunger to kill. He quickly rises through the ranks of the kingdom until he earns the moniker “Berserker of Gluttony.” We can’t wait to see how this skill changes his personality and how he interacts with the other colorful cast of the show.
9. I’m in Love with the Villainess – PlatinumVision
We couldn’t make a list of anime without including an Isekai immediately. We’ve seen several anime of girls who reincarnate in fantasy worlds or games and take a different path to see a new outcome. That’s what’s coming with I’m in Love with the Villainess.Â
Rae is an office worker who, after being tired of the monotony of her daily chores, is reborn in her favorite Otome Game. Being an expert in this world, she ignores the game’s romantic paths and sets her sights on the Villainess. This makes way for a fun romantic comedy that those looking for a lighthearted show will enjoy.
8. A Girl & Her Guard Dog – Project No. 9
What would happen if the daughter of a Yakuza boss went to a normal school? What would happen if a loyal servant of the crime family infiltrated the school to protect the girl? These questions should be answered in A Girl & Her Guard Dog. This show sees Isaku as she tries to live a normal life in high school.Â
Keiya, the loyal 26-year-old servant, infiltrates the school as a student to keep boys away from Isaku. The plot might seem weird to many, but the manga had good reviews then, and many fans of the series are hoping for this show to be a good adaptation.
7. Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective – Diomedéa
This year, we’ve seen some amazing shows where two guys with weird skills pair up to take on some wild tasks. Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective is a fun story of a skilled P.I. and several issues and an unsuccessful police officer who team up to solve crimes. As you can see, this is a recipe for disaster, but we can’t wait to see how it’ll play out.Â
The fantastic part about the manga this show was based on is both main characters. Ron is a descendant of Sherlock Holmes, and while skillful, he has a short temper and is quite rude to people. Totomaru, on the other hand, is lighthearted and never hesitates to help others, something that doesn’t go well with his partner.
6. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End – MADHOUSE
Here’s one fantasy show we can’t wait to see due to its premise, and that is why it deserves a spot as one of the best 10 anime coming in Fall 2023. This anime shows us the life after Frieren, an elven mage, and her party defeated the Demon King. After the fight, Frieren journeys for a while and vows to see her friends a few years later.
However, she’s an elf who can live more than 1,000 years, meaning time isn’t important to her; when she returns to meet her partners, they all die of old age, which fills her with regret. Filled with guilt, she decides to travel the world to meet more people, learn more about magic, and hopefully, find her friend’s soul to give him a proper farewell.
5. The Apothecary Diaries – TOHO Animation x OLM
Moving away from magic, we have The Apothecary Diaries. Based on a light novel, this anime sees Maomao, an eccentric and curious pharmacist, kidnapped and sold to the palace to work as a servant. Despite her unfortunate circumstances, Maomao continues to be as curious as one can be to finish her years of servitude as fast as possible.Â
Everything changes when the children of the Emperor fall ill, and she rushes to cure them, drawing the attention of other influential figures who task her with solving mysteries. Without a doubt, this might be one of the most refreshing anime we’ve seen in years, and the wait is almost over.
4. The Eminence in Shadow Season 2 – Nexus
Whenever we see an edgy character in anime, all we do is roll our eyes until the point they can almost fall off our eye sockets. However, The Eminence in Shadow proves that edgy characters can work perfectly in the background while scheming and manipulating things. This is exactly what this anime is about, and the second season is finally here. The first season of this show was fantastic and an almost faithful adaption to the source material.Â
Now, we’ll see more adventures of Cid and his crew, who, despite the exaggerated fan service, get the job done in this world full of magic and deceit. If you’re tired of the usual hero anime tropes and want to see how a guy can control everything from behind the stage, you can’t miss this show.
3. Goblin Slayer II – LIDENFILMS
One of the most gut-wrenching light novels out there is Goblin Slayer. This novel got an anime adaptation a few years ago, and after a long wait, we’re finally getting a continuation. Given how things ended, and without spoiling much, the Priestess will be the show’s centerpiece.Â
Many speculate the show will now adapt volumes 6 to 10 of the light novel that’ll see our heroes journey to elven lands, help a mage kill Goblins inside a Mausoleum, and take the Sword Maiden to the capital. Undoubtedly, the crew is on its way to adventure, and we can’t wait to tag along.
2. Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3 – Kinema Citrus
This might be one of the best Isekai ever, or it was before its second season. The show’s last season was underwhelming and left fans with a sour taste. It is understandable, given how some shows try to stretch a story that doesn’t have many things to show, but hopefully, the third season will do Naofumi and his friends justice.
Back from another world, Naofumi, Raphtalia, and the rest are ready to embark on new adventures. This time, the show might adapt to the Fallen Heroes arc, which means they need to solve the Spirit Tortoise debacle we saw in previous episodes. Get ready to meet old and new characters in this season.
1. Spy x Family Season 2 – WIT STUDIO x CloverWorks
One of the best anime for the Fall 2023 season is Spy x Family. We’ll finally see more adventures of this dysfunctional and overpowered family. If you haven’t watched it, the show follows the adventures of Loid Forger, a spy who needs to infiltrate a nation’s social circle of influential figures by getting a fake family.Â
However, this family hosts a girl with telepathic powers and one of the world’s deadliest assassins. Prepare to see Loid try to help his fake daughter become the best in school so he can approach some of the nation’s political figures and the fake mother, who wants to continue in a fake marriage to work as an assassin, something she loves to do in her spare time. This show is full of humor, shenanigans, and top-notch action any anime fan will enjoy.
