CBS is adding another name to its list of unscripted material with the premiere of a new game show, Raid the Cage. Originally based on an Israeli game show, Raid the Cage is the latest international adaptation on CBS, joining LoterÃa Loca and a remake of Buddy Games. In revealing their latest game show, CBS executives have denied that their recent interest in unscripted material has anything to do with the WGA strike. Still, it’s hard to deny that they’ve taken a hard turn into game show territory lately.
Originally hosted by Avi Kushnir, Raid the Cage first debuted on Israel’s Channel 2 and ran for four seasons. The game show features two teams of contestants competing to see who can retrieve more prizes from the cage before the timer runs out. The contestants can increase their time by answering quiz questions correctly, and whichever team has the highest-value prizes after three rounds win. The winning team gets to keep their prizes and move on to the final round, with bigger and better prizes, including a car.
CBS Adds ‘Raid the Cage’ to New Game Show Lineup
The American adaptation of Raid the Cage is produced by Sony Picture Television’s Game Show division and is executive produced by Jack Martin. A host for the newest CBS game show has not been announced yet, but more information will likely be released as the show nears its release date. Raid the Cage will join a roster of other international game show adaptations, including LoterÃa Loca, a Mexican-style bingo game hosted by Jaime Camil, who played Rogelio De La Vega on the CW’s Jane the Virgin. CBS has also reportedly ordered a reality remake of Buddy Games (2019), directed by Josh Duhamel.
It’s hard to say what CBS’ recent interest in game shows means for its future as a network. According to Deadline, CBS executives have reportedly claimed that Raid the Cage has been in development for “several months,” and it isn’t a direct result of the ongoing writer’s strike. Of course, the truth remains to be seen, though it’s hard to deny that CBS – and other big-name networks – have been interested in unscripted material ever since the strike’s onset.
A release date for CBS’ Raid the Cage has not yet been announced, though more information will likely become available soon.
