ABC is once again preparing to move that bus with the announcement that Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is getting a reboot. The new take on the old home improvement show will star Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin, co-creators of the global lifestyle brand The Home Edit and stars of Netflix’s Get Organized with Home Edit.
First premiering on ABC in 2004, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition centered around a mobile team of home renovators who traveled the country to rebuild the homes of needy families. For nine seasons on ABC, the team was led by high-energy show host Ty Pennington, while other long-term team members included Paige Hemmis, Paul DiMeo, Tracy Hutson, Ed Sanders, and Eduardo Xol. After its eight-year run on ABC ended in 2012, the show would see a revived seventh season air on HGTV in 2020. The seventh season was led by Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family) with team members Breegan Jane, Carrie Locklyn, and Darren Keefe.
Everything We Know About the ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’ Reboot
Following the somewhat lackluster revival of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in 2020, ABC has announced that the show will return to its original network for a brand new reboot. The revival of the home improvement show will star Clea Shearer of Joanna Teplin, who founded their lifestyle brand The Home Edit in 2015. Centered around helping people organize the clutter in their lives and their homes, the brand was the subject of Getting Organized with Home Edit, a 2020 Netflix series.
ABC has not offered any details on the reboot so far, and it’s unclear how the reboot will differ from the original Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. From what we can gather, the general format of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition reboot will be similar to the original show, with a team of builders and designers traveling the country to renovate family homes to help those in need. Deadline has shared that “[Shearer and Teplin] will lean into their organizing expertise and work with each family to edit every single item they own, deciding what to part ways with and what to keep that will set their new home up with smart systems built for success.”
The ABC reboot will be produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and Endemol Shine North America with Walt Disney Television Alternative. Shyam Balsé (LEGO Masters) will serve as showrunner and executive producer along with Sharon Levy and DJ Nurre. Michael Heyerman will produce for Endemol Shine North America along with Reese Witherspoon, Sara Rea, and Cassie Lambert Scalettar from Hello Sunshine.
