Oscar-winning actor Gary Oldman has announced that he plans to retire from acting very soon. The 64-year-old actor, who younger audiences may know as from the Dark Knight trilogy or the Harry Potter franchise, is currently starring in the Apple TV+ spy series Slow Horses. According to Yahoo! Entertainment, Oldman says that he plans to retire from acting after he completes his run on the show. “I’ve had an enviable career, but careers wain, and I do have other things that interest me outside of acting,” Oldman said. “When you’re young, you think you’re going to get round to doing all of them — read that book — then the years go by.” Oldman went on to say, “I don’t want to be active when I’m 80.”
Legendary Actor Gary Oldman Ready to Retire
Gary Oldman plans to retire after putting his immense talent to a vast amount of work. His work in the British films Sid and Nancy (1986) and Prick Up Your Ears (1987) garnered him massive acclaim. The late film critic Roger Ebert said of him, “There is no point of similarity between the two performances; like a few gifted actors, he is able to re-invent himself for every role. On the basis of these two movies, he is the best young British actor around.”
These films paved the way for Oldman’s impressive Hollywood career. We’ve seen him star as a famous vampire in Bram Stroker’s Dracula, a notorious historical assassin in JFK, a violent pimp in True Romance, Commissioner Gordon, Harry Potter’s godfather, and Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, which earned him his first Oscar. Next year we will see him in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
Gary Oldman is one of the most celebrated and acclaimed actors alive, and some would consider it sad that he plans to retire. Regardless, he has certainly put in his fair share of work.
