The fan-favorite comic book Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is getting a sequel. IDW Publishing made the announcement at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. The sequel is officially titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin II – Re-Evolution. It will reunite the writers from the original, Keavin Eastman and Tom Waltz, with the artists Ben Bishop, Esau Escorza, and Isaac Escorza. It is expected to hit shelves on December 13, making this year great for turtle fans.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin II
The upcoming sequel will pick up right where the first series left off. However, it will focus on the new group of Ninja Turtles introduced at the end of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin. This new group of turtles, Yi, Uno, Odyn, and Moja, is being trained to defend the city by their sensei Casey Marie Jones. There are a lot of parallels between this new group of Ninja Turtles, and the original four fans are familiar with. However, this is a whole new world that these turtles must defend, and it includes new enemies and new dangers.
Creating Something New
Speaking about the sequel, co-writer, and TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman shared how it all began with the notion that “Every beginning must have an end”. For him, Last Ronin was truly a sendoff to the four turtles he helped bring into the world. However, what surprised him about ending one chapter was how easily the opportunity for something new emerged. He shares that this sequel brings “all new characters, in a whole new universe to really sink our teeth into.” However, the best part is that it has “all the original crew back to make sure [they] get it right.”
Senior editor of TMNT Charles Beachman teased the upcoming project, calling it “something truly incredible.” While Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin II does have more turtles and more enemies, it also has a lot of heart. It is a labor of love from all involved, and that really shines through on the page.
