The biggest horror franchise is growing even more. Warner Bros. Discovery is setting up a drama series set in The Conjuring universe for its upcoming streaming service Max, which will combine HBO Max and Discovery+. No details are known about the project’s plot or casting. This will be the first TV project for the franchise.
Producer of the films, Peter Safran, will executive produce The Conjuring drama series. The creative mind that started the franchise, James Wan, is in talks to executive produce. With its expansive mythology of various demons and years’ worth of ventures with its two leads, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, it has plenty of room to explore the world that has been built since the first film in 2013.
The Conjuring drama series is in development at Max
Since 2013, the franchise has grown quite a bit. It consists of three mainline movies and five spinoff films on its various villains, like The Nun and Annabelle. While it has mixed results in reception, it has worked by grossing $2.13 billion, making it the biggest franchise in its genre. That is quite ahead of the runner-up, with the Alien franchise grossing $1.72 billion. Other top franchises include Saw, Resident Evil, and It.
While having connective tissue, the franchise has consisted mostly of standalone films. The Conjuring series will likely take that approach, making it accessible for newcomers and plenty of things to pick up if you are a die-hard fan. It has largely followed tales of the creepy doll and the spooky adventures with Wilson and Farmiga, who portray the real paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.
The news about The Conjuring series comes at a good time as this year will be The Nun 2. It will be directed by Michael Chaves, who is familiar with the franchise as he directed the third mainline film, The Devil Made Me Do It, and The Curse of La Llorona. It was written by Akela Cooper (M3GAN). It will star Storm Reid (Euphoria), Anna Popplewell (Reign), Taissa Farmiga, Bonnie Aarons, and Katelyn Rose Downey (The Princess). The film will hit theaters on September 8.
