If you told me ten years ago that Aquaman would be a huge success in the DC movie universe today, I probably wouldn’t believe you. And yet, Jason Momoa’s take on the King of the Sea has made some major waves. First premiering in Justice League, he got his Aquaman spin-off a year later. Momoa’s devil-may-care surfer attitude worked surprisingly well with the movie’s themes. Combining that with the movie’s impressive character line-up, story, and effects made it a billion-dollar hit. A sequel was confirmed almost immediately. With DC FanDome releasing some behind-the-scenes info on it last month, fans have been interested in the sequel. Just recently, Dolph Lundgren dropped some major praise for Aquaman 2.

Can Aquaman 2 Stand Up to The Hype?

In a recent interview, Dolph Lundgren praised Aquaman 2 up and down. He believes that the director has made something even more impressive. With more excitement and more world-building, he thinks it’ll take over screens. Having an entire ecosystem in the underwater location of Atlantis is a lot to work with, and a part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) that we haven’t gotten nearly enough of yet. That said, fans can’t help but bring up the Amber Heard controversy when thinking of Aquaman 2. Due to the ongoing trial between her and Johnny Depp, most people aren’t huge fans of hers. There was even a campaign to fire her from her role as Aquaman’s counterpart Mera. However, producers failed to listen to this call to action and kept her in. Whether this will affect Aquaman 2‘s box office sales is yet to be seen.

What Can We Expect in the Sequel?

Since the movie is set for a December 2022 release, not much is known of the Aquaman sequel right now. Aquaman 2, AKA Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is a direct sequel to the first. One thing is for sure, the main villain will be Black Manta, who took a backseat to Ocean Master last time. After the events of Aquaman, he’s out for revenge. As one of Aquaman’s most famous foes, it’s sure to be a great battle. Also returning are King Nereus (played by Dolph Lundgren himself), Aquaman’s mentor Vulko (Willem Dafoe), and Aquaman’s human father Thomas Curry (Temuera Morrison). Between this and the Black Adam movie coming July 2022, the DCEU is showing off some of the major villains of each top hero.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set for release on December 16, 2022. Are you excited about Aquaman 2? What are your thoughts on the casting and story choices? Leave a comment below!
