Alicia Vikander and her husband, Michael Fassbender, try to keep their famous lives away from non-celebrity friends and family as they live in Lisbon. The Tomb Raider star and her husband had previously lived in London. Going from London to the capital of Portugal was a big leap. For five years, the couple has found happiness away from one of the world’s biggest cities. Alicia Vikander, born in Gothenburg, Sweden, lived in London for seven years before moving to Lisbon. Her husband, born in Germany and grew up in Ireland, had lived in London for approximately 18 years.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Alicia Vikander talked about the decision to move to Lisbon with her Oscar-nominated husband. Due to their previous home being “a hub for our industry,” the Ex Machina star was not sold on moving when he wanted to get out. After Brexit, that changed, so it was her friends who inspired the decision on their new home.
“I was very sad [about Brexit]. I have always felt very much like a European. We had a lot of friends who talked about moving to Lisbon, and then we went down there, and I [liked it] immediately. And by the time we kind of came back, it didn’t take more than a few weeks, and we had bought what is our house.”
It takes a few things to consider before moving somewhere. Alicia Vikander likes the qualities of Lisbon compared to other places she has lived, like Sweden or London. She said the weather was “a bit better.” While it is a smaller scale than what her little family had experienced before, the people she met were “so friendly.” The bonus is that the couple and their son can go to the beach in less than half an hour. She called it a “very family-oriented place” as she and her “friends’ kids can skateboard or surf.”
While privacy is important, being “grounded” is a piece to the puzzle of the celebrity life, along with a livelihood that is securely not in the spotlight. Besides not being on social media, she sticks to friends she has known before her life of fame. Some are “Swedish, but a lot of them actually work abroad, too.” On top of living in Lisbon, Alicia Vikander has found a way to be a successful star and live a life away from cameras.
