Baba Yaga is returning in some capacity, it seems. In an earnings call from Lionsgate, Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake has confirmed that John Wick 5 is in early development (via ComicBook.com). The plans for the fifth installment of the Keanu Reeves action franchise are a part of other plans to further expand the assassin-filled universe.
John Wick 5’s production is likely to raise some eyebrows. The latest film, Chapter 4, had tied a neat bow to create a definitive end of the character’s arc. While spinoffs may come, with one even confirmed (Ballerina), continuing his story could rewrite some of what happened in Chapter 4 if plans go to what is assumed of the Lionsgate executives wanting to earn more money.
John Wick 5 Confirmed by Lionsgate; in Early Development
In fact, it is no surprise the studio wants to expand the franchise. It had recently crossed the $1 billion mark, with Chapter 4 being the highest-grossing installment with $428 million. By earning that kind of money, of course, it would want to make more movies. It would be in question who would return for another main installment, whether that is Reeves or supporting cast members Laurence Fishburne and Ian McShane.
Regardless of where John Wick 5 is in development as we will get plenty of experiences in this fleshed-out world. Ballerina stars Ana de Armas, which will be the first spinoff movie. The Continental will be a prequel miniseries to see the rise of McShane’s character Winston, who is the owner of the hotel of the same name that acts as a safe haven for assassins. The studio is also looking to develop a AAA video game to expand it into another medium.
So far, we have only had one video game and the four main movies. The video game, John Wick Hex, received modest reviews but came out quietly without much fan fair, unlike the films.
