Some resources are a bit on the gross side, like the bile bags in Valheim. By their name alone, you know you will deal with some entrails, a thought that is disturbing to quite a few people. But gathering bile bags is more than worth it in the game when it comes to crafting. We will show you where to find and use one in Valheim.

A bile bag in Valheim is just what it sounds like. It is an organic material that you can only acquire from one species in the game: Gjall. These flying creatures are massive, and they roam the Mistlands biome. You’ll know they are nearby once you hear the strange airhorn-like noise. Remember that you will need a Wisplight to navigate the Mistlands in the first place. If you don’t have one, collect a Wisp first. From there, you will need Silver and a Wisp to create the Wisplight at a Workbench.

Note that Gjalls are not the easiest enemies to battle, even if they are necessary for the bile bags in Valheim. They can deal some heavy blunt and fire damage. So, it helps to have some fire resistance when fighting Gjalls. Since they are flying, you are better off using ranged weapons and aiming for the orange sacks that hang under the creatures, as those are weak points.

Once you defeat a Gjall, you will get a bile bag in Valheim. A good time to look for Gjalls to battle is day or night, but they despawn around dawn.

Crafting is the only way to use a bile bag in Valheim. Bile bags feature in only two recipes that we will list below:

  • Jotun Bane (One-Handed Axe)
    • Iron x15
    • Refined Eitr x10
    • Yggdrasil Wood x5
    • Bile Bag x3
  • Bile Bomb (Throwable Weapon)
    • Resin x3
    • Bile Bag x1
    • Sap x1

The Jotun Bane can chop down Ancient trees and common ones like Oak and Pine. Additionally, it has a constant yellow glow that’s useful as a slight light source in the dark, but it isn’t as good as other sources.

With the Bile Bomb, it will create a Poison and Fire cloud that lingers for 10 seconds. If enemies remain in the cloud radius, the fire damage stacks while the poison damage refreshes.

Both weapons make it worthwhile to face down Gjalls for their bile bags. Don’t forget to bring your best gear so these potent creatures don’t take you down.

Valheim is available for PC and Xbox One/Series.
