Dragons have always been one of the mightiest creatures in fantasy stories and mythologies. They are powerful beasts that can fly, have fire breath, and are one of the most intelligent beings in fantasy. The first major game that brought dragons to the table was, of course, Dungeons & Dragons. Ever since video games were set in fantasy worlds, many have tried to implement them into the game as well. For instance, Final Fantasy made them even more epic with amazing soundtracks, and The Elder Scrolls series still has fans of the series anticipating Skyblivion to jump back into that game’s world. This makes the task of ranking the best of them all even more challenging. Still, here are the 10 best video game dragons of all time.

Contents
10 – Ender Dragon (Minecraft)9 – Paarthurnax (Skyrim)8 – The Ur-Dragon (Dragon’s Dogma)7 – Alduin (Skyrim)6 – Spyro (Spyro the Dragon Series)5 – Bahamut (Final Fantasy Series)4 – Ridley (Metroid)3 – Charizard (Pokemon Series)2 – Deathwing (World of Warcraft: Cataclysm)1 – Seath the Scaleless (Dark Souls)

10 – Ender Dragon (Minecraft)

Minecraft has been one of the most popular games in the past couple of years, and it is safe to say that it will be like that for another few years as well. The game was probably the starting point of their love for video games which makes the Ender Dragon their first dragon fight in a video game. But it’s just not that; this is truly a tough boss fight. Not only it takes a long time to actually find material in order to reach its lair, but defeating Ender Dragon isn’t simple either. It is almost impossible to defeat it solo, and it only is a little bit easier with friends. But in the end, it will give you enough XP that if you were Level 0, you could jump up to 78 instantly.

9 – Paarthurnax (Skyrim)

For a long period of time, dragons were considered enemies that should only be fought or feared. Paarthurnax in Skyrim is one of those, but after you learn more about him, you will realize he has a much more complex background than simply trying to wipe out humanity. Sure, he has done some terrible things, but at least he’s endeavoring to redeem himself. In his own words, he states,

“Which is better? To be born good or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?”

8 – The Ur-Dragon (Dragon’s Dogma)

Ur-Dragon is one of the most fearsome dragons ever designed in a video game. It is also known as the Undead Dragon, which also breathes purple fire. Not only is he terrifying in appearance, but once the battle starts and you deal some damage, you will realize it has a ridiculous health bar, and there are a lot of weak spots on his body that you should strike. Once you beat the Ur-Dragon, you will never forget that fight.

7 – Alduin (Skyrim)

Skyrim is a renowned game released in 2011 but still has an active fanbase to this day. One of the biggest reasons it was such a popular game, and still is, are the dragons in the game. The best, most powerful, and ancient of them all is Alduin, the game’s main antagonist. Known as the World Eater, Alduin can bring back the extinct dragon race to wipe out humanity. But what makes him one of the best dragons in video game history is the final battle. Fighting him alongside heroes of the Hall of Valor in one of the best arenas designed in a fantasy game is simply magnificent.

6 – Spyro (Spyro the Dragon Series)

While the majority of video game studios were trying to make the most significant, powerful, and evil dragons of all time, Insomniac Games did the exact opposite. They created Spyro the Dragon, where you take control of a cute purple dragon named Spyro in a 3D platformer. Spyro becomes of the most popular characters in video games back in the 90s.

5 – Bahamut (Final Fantasy Series)

Final Fantasy is one the oldest franchise of video games, and it would seem odd if they didn’t have one of the most significant and powerful dragons in video game history. Bahamut has been in multiple Final Fantasy games, sometimes even with different shapes and styles. But in every single of those, he was one of the most powerful characters, whether you summoned him or faced him in a battle. Bahamut has one of the most powerful moves in the franchise, known as Mega Flare, where he flies out of Earth and shoots a flare-like beam at his enemies.

4 – Ridley (Metroid)

The Metroid series have some of the best boss fights in video game history. One of the enemies that have returned multiple times in Metroid games is Ridley. This skeleton dragon is hard to defeat. Whether you play the original or the new ones, Ridley will test your might in the game.

3 – Charizard (Pokemon Series)

Pokemon is one of the most iconic franchises of all time, and Charizard is the most iconic dragon from the series. Charizard is one of the Pokemon that seeing it evolve is satisfying and most rewarding when it reaches its full potential. Even though it is a powerful and huge beast, it is one of the best Fire Pokemon that can easily bond with its trainer.

2 – Deathwing (World of Warcraft: Cataclysm)

If this was the list of the mightiest, most powerful, and dreadful dragons of video game history, Deathwing would be at the top of that list. Not only is Deathwing shockingly smart, but he is also so enormous that he can destroy almost any town when he passes by. The universe of World of Warcraft is enormous, and the only being that can single-handedly destroy that is Deathwing.

1 – Seath the Scaleless (Dark Souls)

Seath is not a simple dragon that you will slay in the Dark Souls universe and move on. The character arc of Seath the Scaleless makes this dragon not a simple beast that you slay but a character that many people might resonate with. Being hated for how he was born and even more hated when he decided to fight against his kin is probably the story of many people’s lives. Seath is probably the wisest and most intelligent dragon in video game history as well since he is always dwelling in The Duke’s Archives, searching for even more knowledge that will eventually drive him mad. For this particular reason, Seath the Scaleless is the best dragon in video games of all time.
