Recently, the Super Mario Bros Wonder reveal trailer blew fans away. Revealed after many great reveals at the most recent Nintendo Direct, Super Mario Bros Wonder is taking 2D Mario in a new direction. Between new mechanics surrounding the Wonder Flower and beautiful art and music, the new 2D Mario game looks promising. Some eagle-eyed fans, however, have made some clever observations in the trailer that you may have missed. Ranging from new items to speculations of unrevealed mechanics, every little detail in the trailer has sparked excitement amongst fans. Here are five hidden details you may have missed while watching Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros Wonder trailer.
5. New Wonder Coins Have Some Peculiarities
The new Super Mario Bros Wonder trailer shows Mario collecting these new Wonder Coins. Although they seem like a variant of your average coin, viewers have noticed a few peculiarities about them. For starters, each Wonder Coin only seems to count for a fraction of a whole one. For example, when Mario collects 1 of the Wonder Coins, the total in the top left corner only increases by 0.1.Â
Currently, it is up to speculation what this actually could mean. Due to the mass at which players find this coin type, it is easier to keep track of them this way. On top of this, these bizarre coins only show up mostly when the Wonder Flower is active. This might mean that Wonder Coins will be used for something completely unlike normal Mario coins.
4. The Super Mario Bros Wonder Trailer Plays With Perspective
Very briefly in the Super Mario Bros Wonder Nintendo Direct trailer, players got to see Princess Peach jump to the foreground of the level. Although at first, it may appear that Princess Peach just grew very large, this moment shows that some levels will play with perspective. Nintendo previously explored this mechanic in Donkey Kong Country Returns.Â
In Super Mario Bros Wonder, this perspective change will lead to exciting puzzles and chaotic multiplayer gameplay. With four players hogging the foreground space, this seems perfect for a couch co-op session. Overall, seeing how Super Mario Bros Wonder handles mechanics like this will be interesting.
3. Each Super Mario Bros Wonder Level Has a Difficulty Rating
In the Super Mario Bros Wonder trailer, while Luigi is choosing levels on the world map, a detail added under the level name has been spotted. Each of the levels Luigi approached had a difficulty rating assigned to it. For the two levels shown, each was labeled one star in terms of difficulty.Â
Although there isn’t a clear indicator of the max number of stars, the difficulty rating looks like it could hold anywhere from three to five stars. This is an interesting addition to the 2D Mario franchise that hasn’t been touched upon in the past. Usually, it was up to fans to agree upon a level’s difficulty. Now, however, Nintendo has done some of the leg work for players.
2. A Mysterious Yellow Wonder Flower Variant Appears
Towards the end of this Nintendo Directs Super Mario Bros Wonder trailer, Mario and friends collected something that appeared to be the new Wonder Flower but was slightly different. This Wonder Flower variant was yellow instead of blue. Although this is a small detail, it could hint at multiple types of Wonder Flowers existing in the game.Â
Potentially, this yellow Wonder Flower could indicate a different kind of challenge than the blue variant has to offer. Another theory could be that each world has its own color Wonder Flower. For example, the first world will have the blue Wonder Flower, while the second world will have a yellow Wonder Flower. Whatever the reason is, the Yellow Flower is an interesting detail in the trailer.
1. Yoshi May Be Playable in Super Mario Bros Wonder
Finally, the most peculiar element of the Super Mario Bros Wonder trailer involves the scene with four Yoshis. In this part, four Yoshis are running through the level without anyone riding them. Additionally, the indicator crown for the first player is visible over the red Yoshi.Â
On top of this, the life counter has a picture of Yoshi next to it instead of the usual cast. For these reasons, it seems that Yoshi will be directly controllable in this game without requiring Mario as a rider. To what extent Yoshi will be playable is currently unknown. At the very least, Yoshi may have special levels or sections where players get the stance to play as Mario’s trusty friend.
