Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack has had a rough start since it launched in October, and it looks like the issues are continuing with the addition of Paper Mario 64. The Expansion Pack adds a collection of Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games to Nintendo Switch Online. When the Expansion Pack was first announced, players criticized the cost and lack of games. The announcement video became Nintendo’s most disliked YouTube video of all time. Upon release, things didn’t fare much better. Many of the Nintendo 64 and Genesis games suffered from severe performance issues. Paper Mario 64 is reportedly suffering from frame drops.
The problems included input lag, sound and music issues, frame rate drops, and issues with button mapping. Considering Nintendo fans were already hesitant about the price, it wasn’t a good start for the upgraded service. Paper Mario 64 has been added to the Expansion Pack this month, and it appears as though players are starting to notice some of the same issues in that game too. According to multiple reports from players across social media, Paper Mario 64 is suffering from frame drops.
Players have been reporting the issue throughout the game. However, the Paper Mario 64 frame drops seem to get worse later in the game, particularly during the later boss battles. There are also complaints of crashes while playing. One player on the r/papermario subreddit had their game crash, and their save data was deleted during the crash. Check out the video below.
When I hit this tree on the switch emulator, my game crashes and my save file is deleted. My save states still exist thank goodness

The frame drops and crashes in Paper Mario 64Â are yet another example of Nintendo’s issues with emulating its own games on the Nintendo Switch. Although the company is adding more games to the service every month, players won’t be happy if the issues they have experienced thus far continue. According to Nintendo president Doug Bowser, Nintendo is taking the player feedback regarding gameplay issues from the Expansion Pack seriously and is working to improve the situation. Unfortunately, with Paper Mario 64, the problems keep popping up.
