Award-winning English actor Ralph Fiennes has spoken out against the controversy regarding author J. K. Rowling. Ralph Fiennes expressed his disapproval of the way that fans are treating the writer of the popular Harry Potter series. It all stems from comments that she made when it came to transgender rights and appropriations. Though not much progress has been made, the actor took the time to talk about the situation.
Ralph Fiennes Speaks in Favor of Harry Potter Author
Initially reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Ralph Fiennes spoke with The New York Times in a “Master of Monsters” interview. He expressed his concern for the messy LGBTQ+ comment controversy with support for the writer. Fans haven’t been shy when reaching out to J. K. Rowling to respond with their own lines of disappointment and disdain, but Ralph Fiennes hasn’t been timid with his response, either.
“The verbal abuse directed at her is disgusting, it’s appalling. I mean, I can understand a viewpoint that might be angry at what she says about women. But it’s not some obscene, über-right-wing fascist. It’s just a woman saying, ‘I’m a woman and I feel I’m a woman and I want to be able to say that I’m a woman.’ And I understand where she’s coming from. Even though I’m not a woman,” Fiennes said. Moreover, he commented on the good nature of the Harry Potter books, by referring to them as “empowerment, about young children finding themselves as human beings.”
Ralph Fiennes famously portrayed Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter films, starting with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. He is just one of the several actors from the franchise who have talked about the Rowling situation, including Daniel Radcliffe, Tom Fenton, and Eddie Redmayne.
The trouble began back in June 2020 when Rowling issued tweets regarding the reality of sex and its transgender branches. Her audience was quick to reply, generating a negative atmosphere coming from both ends. In return, she went on to respond with an extensive essay that didn’t seem to win back any fans due to the backlash.
