The Flash has an interesting story largely influenced by the premises of DC Comics’ Flashpoint narrative. While most fans have yet to see The Flash, as it is set to hit the theaters on June 16, they can be assured that it will have many wow moments. Though the film borrows heavily from Flashpoint, The Flash tweaks the plot, introducing double superheroes with contrasting and similar characters. But how different is The Flash from Flashpoint and how did the latter influence the movie?
The Flashpoint Plot Summary
The Flashpoint comics that inspired The Flash reveal that Barry’s life began in a state of confusion. He wakes up in an unknown world to realize how different it is, the timeline having been changed by his actions. Flash realizes he has lost his connection to the Speed Force, and Batman in that world is different from what he knows. In The Flash movie, Flash is the only one who can undo this commotion, plus he has a clear memory of what his world is like.
Readers would find it interesting to note that Flash is not an orphan. In fact, the entire Flashpoint happened because Flash attempted to go back in time and changed things. The purpose of the time travel was to save his mother, Nora, from untimely death. He succeeded, but the consequence of this had sweeping negative repercussions for the rest of the world.
Flashpoint Influenced Double Flash in the Movie
In the comics, Barry Allen and Thawne play each other’s doppelgangers from different timelines. Before Flashpoint was inadvertently created through the superhero’s action, their relationship was symbiotic. But following the changes, Thawne grew more powerful, thus setting the stage for a hero vs villain relationship between the pair.
Judging from The Flash film trailer, the two-of-a-kind idea was adopted. But unlike the villain/hero relationship, Barry from the Multiverse and the DCU Barry has a more friendly one. In fact, the original Barry shows an in-depth maturity lacking in the Multiverse Barry, and somehow, has him under his tutelage. Instead of antagonizing each other (though they argue about which world is best), they team up to defeat evil.
Older Batman
The Flashpoint narrative told fans that the Dark Knight was interested in Flash’s predicament and partnered with him to save the world. He was also an older Batman. Similarly, The Flash adopted an older Batman theory to team up with Barry. In the comics, Thomas Wayne, Bruce’s dad, became Batman after grieving for his wife and son. But DC fans will be reunited with the original Bruce Wayne played by Michael Keaton.
Flashpoint Has Superman, While The Flash Has Supergirl
Superman’s landing base was Metropolis, but the ruling powers were quick to keep him trapped underground, thereby depriving him of his power source: the sun. Barry, Batman, and Cyborg all team up to rescue the Kryptonian, who joins the epic fight in the end.
Unlike Flashpoint, Supergirl takes her cousin’s place. She was also locked up in a Siberian prison, with that government attempting to keep her away. But Barry and Batman saved the day, only to find out that it was not Superman in the cell.
