Once Upon A Time In Hollywood has recently hit a new box office milestone. According to Gamespot and Deadline, after another weekend in cinemas, the film has now made a global box office revenue of $329.4 million. This is cut between the markets of the USA and Canada ($136.9 million) and foreign markets ($195.5 million). But what does this mean for the film? Well, these figures add up to make Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Tarantino’s 2nd largest grossing movie. It sits comfortably in between Django Unchained ($425.4 million) and Inglorious Basterds ($321.5 million).

“A faded television actor and his stunt double strive to achieve fame and success in the film industry during the final years of Hollywood’s Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles.”
Could this be any more Tarantino? With the directors take on genres, such as the western and war movie, Tarantino always seems to be making movies that are a maturation of the past. They are violent, profane and contain pitch-black humor, but something classic always remains within them. It would seem Tarantino is still living in that “Golden Age”.
This has never been truer than with Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Not only is it specifically set in the era, with the lighting suggesting that glow of nostalgia, it also has a major ensemble cast. Tarantino has biggest some of, if not the most, widely known actors of today. This reminds me of the ensemble features of yesteryear. Think The Longest Day (1962) and It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (1963). What we can conclusively say is that Tarantino is definitely indulging in his influences.
What Did We Think of Once Upon a Time In Hollywood?
In our review of the film, writer Damian Gordon said:
“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood features some of the most hilarious and sweat-inducing scenes on the big screen this year. It is also the most bloated clocking in just shy of three hours to tell a narrative that could have been told in two.”
Giving the film three stars out of five, the film is good, it’s just not great.
