Disney and Pixar have officially announced the release date for a brand new Cars mini-series, titled Cars on the Road, in anticipation of Disney+ Day. The series will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on September 8, 2022, and will follow follows Lightning McQueen and his best friend, Mater, as they take a long cross-country road trip east to get to Mater’s sister’s wedding. Owen Wilson and Larry the Cabel Guy will reprise their roles as the duo.
Cars on the Road Disney+ Premiere Date and Trailer Highlights
Cars on the Road will follow series favorites Lightning McQueen and Mater as they journey across the country to visit Mater’s sister, who is getting married. The series will officially premiere on Disney+ Day, September 8, 2022, which will lead into D23 Expo: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. According to Disney, this event will be presented by Visa in Anaheim, California, and will premiere a host of new content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic, and more.
Cars on the Road will consist of 9 episodes produced by Marc Sondheimer, best known for his work on the acclaimed short film Piper, and directed by Steve Purcell (Episodes 1, 2, and 8), Bobby Podesta (Episodes 5, 6, and 9) and Brian Fee (Episodes 3, 4, and 7), with composition by Jake Monaco.
“The series is a romp across the country with Lightning McQueen and Mater,” said Purcell. “Like any real road trip, every day is a new mini-adventure with unexpected twists and turns.”
The Cars on the Road trailer sees Lightning and Mater encountering several bumps and adventures along their trip, including a car circus, an automatic dinosaur exhibit, a post-apocalyptic gang, a haunted house, a gladiator tournament, and a lot more along the way.
The original Cars came out in 2006 and saw the hotshot race car Lightning McQueen find himself under arrest in the small town of Radiator Springs, where he meets Mater and several other characters, including his girlfriend Sally and his mentor Doc Hudson.
