From Fallout 3 to Starfield, here are the best companions that players can meet during their adventures throughout Bethesda RPGs.

With the massive scope of each Bethesda RPG’s open world, traveling can get a bit lonely at times. Luckily, most of these games allow you to recruit a companion to adventure with. With tons of different companions available, each with their own unique personalities and skills, some are bound to be better than others. From Fallout 3 to Starfield, here are the best Bethesda companions, ranked.

Contents
10. Lydia9. Codsworth8. Vilkas7. Strong6. Sarah Morgen5. Nick Valentine4. J’zargo3. Barrett2. Dogmeat1. Curie

10. Lydia

Lydia may not be the best Bethesda companion, but she holds a special place in players' hearts.

As far as Bethesda’s companions are concerned, Lydia is a bit more generic than other Skyrim characters. However, as the first follower for many, Lydia holds a special place in hundreds of Dragonborns’ hearts. For abilities, she’s a generic warrior and not the strongest in the world. Regarding starter companions, Lydia is a strong start for those starting their journey in the land of the Nords.

9. Codsworth

Codsworth is a great Bethesda companion in Fallout.

Following Lydia, we have Codsworth, the first companion many players will encounter in Fallout 4. Unlike Lydia, Codsworth has a lot more personality and connections to the protagonist. Being your childhood Mister Handy robot, Codsworth has a protective instinct for the Soul Survivor. With a great voice and an upbeat attitude, Codsworth is a superb Bethesda companion to travel with.

8. Vilkas

Vilkas is an amazing Bethesda companion.

Vilkas is one of the Companions faction members in Skyrim and an excellent choice for a Bethesda NPC sidekick. Like many of the Companions, Vilkas is not only a strong fighter but can also transform into a werewolf. Though he’s initially a bit gruff with the Dragonborn, he’ll warm up over time. This development makes for a great character arch and a strong choice for a Bethesda follower.

7. Strong

Strong is a fun and memorable Bethesda companion.

Generally, Super Mutants in Fallout 4 are aggressive and deadly. However, the Super Mutant, Strong, is both loyal to the Sole Survivor and one of the best Bethesda companions. His strength and fighting capabilities are handy for combat. Additionally, his search for the “milk of human kindness” makes for a hilarious and memorable start to his adventures.

6. Sarah Morgen

Sarah Morgan is a great Bethesda RPG companion option in Starfield.

For the first Bethesda companion in Starfield, we have Sarah Morgan, the fearless leader of the Constellation and the first main follower you get in the game. Compared to other recruitable companions you meet, Sarah has the most personality and some of the best dialogue out of any Bethesda follower. Although she isn’t the best romance option in Starfield, you won’t regret adventuring with Sarah during your first steps into space exploration.

5. Nick Valentine

Nick Valentine is an awesome character and companion in Bethesda's Fallout 4.

In Fallout 4, we have the Synth detective Nick Valentine. In the game, the Sole Survivor must hire Nick to help search for their lost son. Despite his mysterious origins, Nick is helpful, kind, and quick-witted. Plus, he can help with the player’s hacking skills, so if you like messing with computer terminals, Nick is a great Bethesda companion.

4. J’zargo

J'zargo is a fun and powerful follower.

Arguably, the best Bethesda companion from Skyrim would have to be J’zargo. J’zargo is an apprentice at the College of Winterhold. However, two factors set him apart from other followers. Mainly, J’zargo has some of the best companion dialogue in the game and is fun to adventure with. Besides this, J’zargo can level indefinitely as well, making him one of the strongest followers in Skyrim.

3. Barrett

Barrett is yet another Bethesda RPG companions in Starfield.

Similar to J’zargo, Barrett is a joy to hang out with in Starfield and arguably the best companion. He is one of the first NPCs you meet in Starfield’s story, though he doesn’t become a follower until later in the campaign. Being both adventurous, fun-loving, and hilarious, Barrett makes for the best kind of companion to travel the galaxy with. Additionally, the character depth added once you learn his backstory makes him one of the best Bethesda RPG followers.

2. Dogmeat

Dogmeat is an icon of RPGs.

Of course, no Fallout game is complete without the faithful Bethesda companion, Dogmeat. Dogmeat has appeared as a follower in every Fallout game as an icon of the series. Loyal and adorable, Dogmeat instantly captures the hearts of any player who meets the canine follower. Though it may be rough to take a dog into battle sometimes, Dogmeat will always be by your side to fight if needed.

1. Curie

Curie is the best follower in my opinion.

Finally, the best Bethesda companion of all time would have to be Curie from Fallout 4. When you meet Curie, they start as a robot who has completed their task of creating a cure for many pathogens. However, Curie has the desire to become humanoid to continue their scientific endeavors. Eventually, the Soul Survivor assists them with obtaining a new Synth body. With a wonderful personality and a relatable arch, Curie will always be fun to adventure with.
